Story, philosophy and process
LIPA ceramics is dedicated to functional ceramics – dinnerware, home décor and ceramic tiles. All the ceramics are completely handmade, from stoneware and earthenware clay. After the bisque firing, I glaze them with my own food safe glazes, afterwards they are fired again. I often leave my pieces with a “naked”, unglazed exterior. I love the contrast between the different surfaces in one piece. I think it's very appealing and sincere to be able to see and touch all the materials bound together. Before the second firing and sometimes after it as well, I apply a finishing touch like water sanding for additional smoothness. The making process is long and time consuming. Each piece requires its own moment, care and devotion, but this complexity is essential to the final result. Making a structure out of mud and water together with the fire applied to make it a solid and lasting object, brings a profound enjoyment that is very deep and philosophical. I play with something which is not seen but felt, with a fragility that is being transformed into a stone. It is a value that is unique and transcendental.
